Ike and Madelene Mundy of Fremont, Indiana, purchased the Barn Stable property in 1954. The original farmhouse had burned and they were planning on building a new home. They raised Black Angus cattle and sheep for a year until Madelene became fascinated with the beauty and structure of the "old barn" and decided to renovate.
Madelene began by purchasing the old Brown School near Clear Lake, Indiana that she attended as a child. She then personally handlaid the bricks from her alma mater on the barn floor. The cut stone foundation of the school was used for the fireplaces. Madelene then bought another old barn and used it's siding for the interior walls of the barn. Six years in the making, Barn Stable Antiques held it's grand opening in 1965.
Over the next 30 years, the Mundy's built a burgeoning business. Along the way, with help from the Amish, Madelene and Ike also remodeled an old double corn crib which became their home.
The Barn Stable was well known for quality antiques and was frequented by people from afar during the first 30 years it was in operation. Customers were drawn to the character of the barn and grounds and also enjoyed watching Madelene quilt on her old quilting frames in the shop. As you can imagine, loyal customers were sad to see the Mundy's close the shop in 1994.
But we know the story does not end here. Madelene and Ike's daughter, Pat Helton, and her husband, Don, reopened the Barn Stable on Memorial Day, 1998. Pat has collected antiques since her college days and it had always been a dream of hers to return home and carry on the family tradition of Barn Stable Antiques.
And in 1998 Pat and Don were able to fulfill the Mundy's original vision for the property, building a reproduction 1700's Cape Cod home on the exact site Pat's parents had planned to build their dream home... that is before Madelene became interested in the "Old Barn".
